Golden Gloves 2010 Summary
We completed our Florida Golden Gloves State Championships with flying colors and flying fists in the ring. . Results appear below. Our Open division boxers will advance to Little Rock, Arkansas for our National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, May 2-9, 2010 THANK YOU to all of our athletes, coaches, officials, and administrators. In my eyes, you are all champions. We must offer special thanks to Angel Nazario of OCF Gym in Hallandale who stepped up and hosted our tournament. Armando Fiallo, our Florida Gold Coast President deserves a big thanks for being the all around guy who can do, and does, it all.
With our “back to the old days” format of “North vs. South,” we had many incredible bouts that were wildly entertaining and super competitive. Despite the fierce competition, and quest for bragging rights, our Florida Golden Gloves State Championship TEAM consists of 5 boxers from the north and 5 boxers from the south. We have something to look forward to next year!
We had some back stories to this event that make it both very human and interesting:
- One of our coaches had to visit the hospital the day of the tournament with possible post-surgery heart trouble. When told that he had to remain under observation, he became very creative and persuasive (one of our treasured Golden Gloves traits). Jim convinced the doctor to let him out of the hospital. One stipulation…the doctor, who had to remain at Jim’s side, insisted on attending the tournament with emergency medical personnel in tow! Side note: Jim’s boxer, Craig Duncan, won via “knockout” and the referee stopped the contest.
- Our Super Heavyweight Champ, Josh Butler, had a rough drive back home to Altamonte Springs. The vehicle, in which he was traveling, caught fire. His clothing, boxing gear, and belongings were burnt up in the vehicle. Josh called to let me know of his trouble, and was most concerned about his Title BELT! … (exhibiting another treasured Golden Gloves trait; commitment & desire). Needless to say, Josh will be issued a new Golden Gloves Championship Title Belt.
- In one of our lighter weight classes, we had a new open division boxer that truly gave his all. He competed to the point of puking in the ring. While it may not be glamorous, he exhibited another treasured Golden Gloves trait (determination). That determination will serve Steve well in the future, in life as well as in the ring. Special note: A quick acting Coach Todd immediately made sure his boxer was OK and put his towel to work to clean up.
We thank you all, and remember, “It is not how many times you get knocked down that counts, It’s how many times you get back up!”
